This radiograph shows a vagal nerve stimulator. The generator projects over the left hemithorax and a single thin lead tracks to the left base of neck. At first glance this may be mistaken for a pacemaker, but the course and caliber of the lead indicate that this is a different device. Vagal nerve stimulators have been approved for several uses including treatment-resistant epilepsy, treatment-resistant depression, and stroke rehabilitation. The exam is otherwise unremarkable.
